Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and
do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9
At my son’s request, I recently read the book The Insanity of God, which is
a true story of one man’s travels throughout the world interviewing persecuted
Christians. Their sufferings, hardships, and sacrifices are both heartbreaking and
enormously uplifting. My faith has never been challenged the way theirs has and
I feel like a spiritual infant compared to them.
Several years ago, I was faced with a difficult decision that could have cost me my
job—not my freedom, life, or family. Nonetheless, the Lord made it clear what I
needed to do even if it did cost me my job. I was troubled and fearful as I made
this decision, and the verse that carried me through the two-year process and
beyond was Joshua 1:9. As it turned out, I did not lose my job.
This promise is also fulfilled in Matthew 28:20, “And behold, I am with you always,
to the end of the age.” We are also encouraged by 1 John 4:4 which reminds us that
“he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
Heavenly Father, as we are challenged, discouraged, and frightened, help us to
remember that You are always with us.
