P. 37
Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless
and pure, children of God, without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in
which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life.
Philippians 2:14–16 NIV
We find two challenges here: the reminder that a critical spirit is so
unbecoming and easily contradicts the faith we proclaim, and the closing
challenge to live out our faith.
How often at the end of a busy day, I have looked up at the night sky, taken a deep
breath, and been reassured of God’s deep and abiding presence. In the gentleness
of a starry night there is comfort, and hope, and promise. In the quiet orderliness
there is a deep sense of God’s strength.
Over the years there have been some lean and difficult months. My biological
family, though always supportive, lived several hours away. So it was my church
family who walked with me, and Christian men who mentored my son. These
folks were bright and shining stars in my “universe.”
I have been at Grace about 12 years. I have learned so much in the teaching
from the pulpit, in Bible study, and in Sunday school. I have found the gifts of
friendship and fellowship and prayer and laughter. Here we can interact with the
tiniest and the eldest, and every age and season in between. I am so glad in my
heart that God brought me to worship here.
Thank You, Lord, for all the “stars” that walk in this place. Holy Spirit, guide
us to see those places where we can shine Your light on those whose road is
hard. Help us to hold out the Word of life in our daily walk, and in everything
to give You the praise and glory.
