Then the King will say to those on His right, “Come, you who are blessed of My
Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For
I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me
something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed
Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.”
Matthew 25:34–36 NASB
In England, Australia, and some other countries cars drive on the left side of
the road. On a recent trip to London, I almost became a hood ornament on one of
those famous black taxis because I stepped into a cross walk without looking the
right way. This can happen to us spiritually…we can get tripped up or miss God’s
blessings by looking in the wrong direction.
In Matthew 25, Jesus commended His followers for ministering to those who
were hungry, thirsty, strangers, naked, sick, or in prison. He called them “the
least of these”.
If we’re honest, most of us seldom if ever come in contact with “the least of
these.” We surround ourselves with friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers.
It’s easy getting into a spiritual rut thinking of our own needs, family needs
or congregational needs. This is natural and the needs of those around us are
important. But if we focus our spiritual energy on ourselves and those around us
who we are most comfortable with, we can miss God’s blessings.
Jesus is encouraging His followers to get out of their comfort zone and minister
to “the least of these.” The opportunities are all around us; just look in the right
direction.
Lord, help us look in the right direction to see those You called “the least of
these.” Help us so we don’t miss the blessings You have for us in serving others.
