Older women…are to teach what is good, and so train the young women.
Titus 2:3–4
“Do it, Jesus! Yes, Lord. Do it!” the elderly woman next to me whispered, as
other women took turns praying aloud. I had never heard such fervent prayer.
I was stunned by the beauty of these godly women praying. Quiet tears streamed
down my face. I was determined to learn to pray like they did. I was sure this was
a place my faith could grow. That was a long time ago, when I was attending a
Bible study at Grace. Not long after, we began coming to church here on Sundays
as well.
Interacting with older women, and making friends outside my own age group,
was refreshing. The wisdom and perspective the years gave my older friends was
soothing and calming. My hectic life was surely a temporary stage. My children
would surely grow up.
I treasure the memories of time spent with several older women, some who are
now with God. They mentored me, modeled leadership, and befriended me.
I learned that church could be like a big family. You interact, serve, and grow
together with people across all ages and stages. And you find life richer for it.
Lord, thank You for a church family that spans generations, and for our rich
heritage of prayer and faith.
