P. 25
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in
weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the
power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with
weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak,
then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9–10
The apostle Paul was given a “thorn in the flesh,” a weakness of some sort
(2 Corinthians 12:7). He was glad to rejoice in this, knowing that God’s power
could thereby “rest” on him!
We all have endured moments, days, even years, when we were overwhelmed with
a sense of weakness. We have physical weakness, emotional weakness, financial
weakness, a weak sense of direction, or lack of knowledge. We are overwhelmed
with a troubled relationship or a bewildering dilemma at work or home, which
leaves us feeling weak and helpless.
As a mother of six, these feelings are familiar territory. But we all can relate to
Paul’s experience in some way, regardless of our profession or station in life!
There are very many Bible verses about strength from God. (Seriously—Google
it!) The essence of His strength in our lives is so beautiful. He is strong; we rest.
He fights for us; we trust and obey. He uses the weak to “shame the strong.”
We “boast in our weakness” and let His power rest upon us.
It is all to His glory. He is all-powerful. Let us rest in Him! Let us rejoice! Let us
endure our weaknesses and troubles with His strength! The joy of the Lord is our
strength!
Father, help us return to You and rest, in quietness and in trust, so that You
will then let Your power rest upon us in all our weakness (Isaiah 30:15).
