P. 20
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. Psalm 23:1
The well-known, well-loved twenty-third Psalm is the only complete chapter
included in the Well-Versed Kids Scripture memory program. I could quote it
long before we developed Well-Versed Kids for Grace Presbyterian, our home
church from 1981-1988.
Recently those words I knew by heart, were leading me to a deeper understanding
of God’s shepherd care.
The New Living Bible changes “I shall not want” to “I have everything I need.”
I like the positive; it gives a new understanding of what God is saying. It leads
me to pray, What are my needs today? How, my Shepherd, are You going to meet
those needs? What does it look like to trust You with my needs? And therein lies my
answer, trust.
Sometimes it’s trusting God with a conversation I know is coming.
Sometimes it’s trusting God that I can finish a project on time.
Sometimes it’s trusting God for safety as our kids are traveling.
Sometimes it’s trusting God when I don’t understand.
But I know He wants my trust. A paraphrase might be, God, You are my Good
Shepherd; I am going to trust You to provide what I need whether I understand or not.
Dear Jesus, I want to trust You with my needs. Would You help me to experi-
ence You and be aware of You meeting those needs? Amen.
