You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your
book? Psalm 56:8
A keepsake given to me by a friend reminds me of this psalm of lament. It is a
small glass container called a “tear bottle”.
In Psalm 56 the beautiful imagery of David speaks to us about the tenderness of
God. Distress and fear overwhelmed him, and he begins by pleading for God’s
mercy.
He then rests his faith in God’s promises by declaring, “this I know, that God is
for me”(verse 9).
Believing that his God observed with tender concern, David could boldly say in
verse 10, “In God, whose word I praise, in the Lord, whose word I praise.” His plea
for mercy ends in thankful praise.
Throughout 150 years, for our family of Grace there have been tossings and
tears…tears of joy and tears of sorrow.
We follow in their train as we continue to trust in God’s loving and tender heart.
Father, thank You that You have a “bottle and a book” for Your children. And
this we know, “that God is for us.”
