P. 32
Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like
wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have
turned again, strengthen your brothers. Luke 22:31–32
As I read that phrase in the account predicting Peter’s denial, I thought of
many in our congregation whose faith is being—or has been—tested through
natural disaster, illness, injury, chronic pain, broken relationships, job losses, etc.
Many times, the question is asked, “Why?” Child Evangelism Fellowship has a
booklet called, “Do You Wonder Why?” It is a tool that addresses that question,
knowing that suffering people do ask it.
In regards to trials, Peter writes: “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial
when it comes upon you to test you” (1 Peter 4:12). James also refers to “the
testing of your faith” in James 1:3.
Those of us in the Monday morning prayer group often wonder how we should
pray for those who are suffering, especially when it is long term. Sometimes the
answer doesn’t come in this life.
Father, in the name of Jesus, we pray that the faith of those who are suffering
now would not fail.
