P. 34
In Exodus 33:12–23 Moses prays and boldly asks the Lord for three things.
In verse 13 he says, “Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show
me now your ways, that I may know you…”
In verse 15 Moses says, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up
from here.”
In verse 18 Moses asks, “Please show me your glory.”
When we consider Moses’ intercession on behalf of the Israelites, a beautiful
model unfolds that both foreshadows the goodness of Christ’s coming to satisfy
our deepest needs—direction, presence, and redemptive glory—but also a
simultaneous cry of our hearts here and now. Moses makes three key requests
of God: show me Your ways, come with Your people, and show Your glory. We
must confess we often consider much lesser prayers from our own selfish hearts.
The beautiful prayer offered in Exodus 33 redirects our individual thoughts to
God’s grander purpose for His people. As Grace celebrates 150 years, what higher
thoughts could be considered than to be His church praying for His direction,
practicing His presence of Christ in us, and pleading for His glory to be revealed
through us.
The Bible tells us from the foundations of the world the redemptive glory of
Christ pursues His people across time and history, and a future glory awaits that
our imaginations can scarcely dream. Hallelujah, what a Savior!
Lord Jesus, we long for Your coming and for the glorification You promised.
While we wait, give us eyes to see Your faithfulness, and give us hearts that
plead continually for Your glory to be revealed in us.
