Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what
he has done. I Chronicles 16:8 NIV
Cathedrals are like monuments of Christianity built to represent a legacy
of faith and devotion. In the small town of Victoria, Kansas tourists flock to see
the “Cathedral of the Plains.” The church’s twin bell towers rise majestically 141
feet toward the heavens. Built by devoted, hard-working immigrants beginning
in 1908, every man in the parish over age 12 was assessed $45 and his family
required to haul six loads of native limestone blocks each year with a horse or
mule. With sweat and sacrifice, the church was completed in 1911. In 1972 the
replacement value of this beautiful church was estimated at two-and-a-half
billion dollars.
An eternal legacy stands at Grace Presbyterian, not with stones and mortar, but
with a more durable monument: a message for eternity. This legacy began in 1862
with 19 students and the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ that all who would
believe would be saved. Meeting in a railroad train car, imagine prayer after prayer
ascending to heaven, asking God to spread the gospel through them. Imagine if
they could see over time the answers to their prayers: growth and buildings and
always a focus on spreading the good news of salvation, and that vision eventually
encompassing the world with Grace-sent missionaries.
Lord Jesus, we pray You would continue the legacy of Grace Presbyterian.
Make us a monument to Your glory; not merely a beautiful building, but
devoted and faithful servants carrying on the legacy of faith and the message
of salvation in Jesus Christ.
