But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become
children of God. John 1:12
I met my former Sunday school student in the narthex at church and asked
how her family’s adoption process was coming along, as she previously had
asked for prayer. With excitement she told me she was cleaning her neighbor’s
bathrooms, and her earnings were going toward the adoption. I thought of this
nine-year-old washing sinks, scrubbing toilets, and cleaning tubs, helping to
bring a special child into their family.
My thoughts went to God and how He brought us into His family with the
ultimate sacrifice of love. His plan for us to be adopted into His family cost our
Heavenly Father the death of His one and only Son. He sacrificed Jesus because
of His great love for us. Even when we were dead in our sin, He made us alive by
saving us and setting us apart as His adopted children.
As a result of our adoption, we have a glorious inheritance in Christ! We get to
know and experience God’s unconditional and eternal love, His forgiveness of
sins, the immeasurable greatness of His power, a living hope, and the riches of His
grace (see Ephesians 1:3–14). Our adoption is final, and we have been sealed by
the Holy Spirit. Nothing can ever separate us from the love of God!
Heavenly Father, thank You that we have been chosen with love. As Your
children, we pray You would help us to demonstrate Your love and grace and
we would increasingly bear resemblance to You, our Father.
