“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and
not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
Looking back we can see God’s hand directing our son’s path, even with our
mistakes. We encouraged him to be involved in activities, when at times he just
wanted to stay home and work on a project he enjoyed: amateur radio. Also called
ham radio, it was wireless communication before internet or cell phones, and still
is a hobby for many today. Our son quit high school football for more time to
learn to operate a ham radio and get his FCC radio operator license. Little did we
know that this “alone time” was God’s preparation.
Our son eventually went to Ecuador for twelve years, helping provide power to
operate missionary radio (HCJB) and reach many countries with God’s Word.
It was very hard at first to see him and his wife go overseas, where we had little
contact with them. There was no email, rare phone calls with poor connections,
and weeks between letters. But God provided one reliable way to connect: we
found two men in Peoria with ham radio. Proof of God’s leading in earlier years.
Today they’re based in the States but continue their ministry overseas. God had
a plan for them, and it was a blessing for us to be able to watch Him lead, love,
protect, and care for them in order to further His work through their hands.
We pray for safety for travel, communication, planning, and gracious fellow-
ship for all who share God’s love with those of other countries. We thank God
for all of those at Grace who have followed and uplifted missions in prayer.
