And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With
this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
Ephesians 6:18 NIV
Some consider all who are on the cancer journey “survivors.” I don’t feel like
a “survivor” right now as I am just beginning my fight. However, I do consider
myself a “warrior.” I am in a battle and the LORD of Heaven’s Armies is my
commander in chief. He says He will never leave me and will walk before and
behind me.
Priscilla Shirer in her study, The Armor of God, describes the warriors who take
up the shield of faith. The shields were made from heavy wood, covered with
leather, and about the size of a door. When the warriors would go into battle, they
would dip their shields in water and gather together in a tight circle with their
shields facing out. As the flaming arrows came they would raise their shields over
their heads forming a tight covering, like a shell of a turtle, and be able to ward
off the enemy together.
When God’s people pray for each other, they become fellow warriors, holding up
the shield of faith. They can carry one another’s burdens and help encourage one
another. In this way, God’s name will be glorified and His victory be made known
to all generations.
Lord, as fellow warriors, help us to be on alert, praying for one another con-
tinually, and encouraging one another in the battle.
