And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything
according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we
ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. 1 John 5:14–16
Nearly 40 years ago, I began attending Grace and the College and Career
Class. It was there I met my beautiful wife, Karen, and where I was exhorted to
memorize and meditate on Scripture, and to pray using a format similar to the
following, which continues to be a blessing to this day.
1. Pray according to God’s will; pray appropriate Scripture (1 John 5:14, 15).
2. Ask God’s forgiveness for not obeying Him and His Word (1 John 1:9).
3. Ask for His wisdom and grace (help) to obey (James 1:5, Hebrews 4:16).
4. Ask for His wisdom and grace to help me to help others obey (Matthew 28:18–20).
For example, below are the verses Matthew 22:36–40, and then in bold is the
prayer using this format.
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You
shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all
your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You
shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the
Law and the Prophets.”
Father, Your Word tells us, we should love You with all our hearts, souls and
minds and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Please forgive us for not loving
You with all our hearts, souls, and minds; and forgive us for not loving our
neighbors. Please give us Your wisdom, grace, and help to love You with all
our hearts, souls, and minds and to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.
We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
