Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give you.
Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27
On the morning of September 11, 2001, I heard a radio host announce that a
second plane had just flown into the World Trade Center. I sat at a stoplight and
felt a sense of dread sink in, as I realized our two sons who were serving in the
Marine Corps would likely be heading off to war.
Glancing over to my right, I saw our church shining like a beacon of light. An
overwhelming sense of peace filled my downcast soul as I realized God had put
me in that spot, at that moment. I felt He was letting me know He was still in
control, that I should not be afraid, and that He would see us through whatever
was coming our way.
The people of Grace, many who were our friends and many we didn’t even know,
lifted us up with prayers and encouraging notes that strengthened our hearts.
It gave peace to think of the continuous prayer from those who signed up to pray
for time slots on our church “prayer wall.” God even gave me the courage to step
out of my comfort zone, and with another mom, start a military moms prayer
group outside of our church.
God’s grace and peace carried us through until we welcomed our sons safely
home from Iraq.
Thank You Lord for the peace that only You can give and for reminding us
that there is no safer place to be in the world than in Your hands. Be with all
who serve in our military. Bless them and keep them safe, and give peace to
their families.
