We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the
glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done…he
commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might
know them…and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their
hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments.
Psalm 78:4–7
On March 1st, 1862, the beginning of a future church was launched, not in a
building filled with adults, but in a train car filled with children coming to Sunday
school to learn the Holy Scriptures and to hear the good news of Jesus Christ.
From that train car grew a mission Sunday school outreach that in God’s time and
providence became a growing and thriving church known as Grace Presbyterian
Church. Today that church has a worldwide ministry outreach in teaching and
proclaiming the same Holy Scriptures and the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Sunday school railway tracks of yesterday are still the foundational tracks
Grace Presbyterian Church is built on today: Scripture alone, by faith alone, by
God’s grace alone, in Christ alone, and for the glory of God alone. These are the
unchangeable truths we will tell the coming generation.
By God’s grace, the mission of Grace Presbyterian Church is still on track—
teaching and ministering to all generations—both adults and children. It is
still proclaiming to all the same message taught over 150 years ago to children
gathered in a train car to hear God’s Word and the unchanging, grace-filled
gospel message of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Lord, we thank You for the rich and beautiful heritage of our church and for
the proclamation of Your grace to be carried forward to all generations, so
that we, all by Your grace, may know You and set our hope in You, our eternal
Lord and Savior.
