Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. …
And without faith it is impossible to please him. Hebrews 11:1, 6
Will you jump?
The eleventh chapter of the book of Hebrews has been referred to as “the hall of
faith.” Although the author of the book is unknown, this chapter is filled with
stories of amazing men and women who followed God’s command. Able, Enoch,
Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Joseph, Rahab, David... they did what was asked of
them because they believed in God’s promises—even if they didn’t yet know the
end game.
When I am feeling unsure of my next steps, when I’m too scared to take that
blind leap off a cliff, I can look back at this chapter and see how God used each
of these flawed human beings to fulfil His greater purpose; and I’m reminded He
can use me too.
Unlike these Old Testament examples of faith, we know how this story ends. And
we know that through grace, not by our works, we’ve been given the promise of
eternal life. Yet God still calls us to obedience. However big or small your leap of
faith may be— whether it’s traveling to a country you never thought you’d visit
in order to bring home a son or daughter, or beginning a neighborhood Bible
study—God can and will use you. We only need to jump.
Heavenly Father, give us the ears to listen and the faith to follow Your leading.
Thank You for the promise of eternal life. Amen.
