P. 84
But his disciples took him (Paul) by night and let him down through an opening in
the wall, lowering him in a basket. Acts 9:25
Years ago at Grace, I heard a sermon centered on this verse. What could stand
out from this side note on Paul’s life? His disciples and friends aided him in a
perilous situation by “holding the ropes” and lowering him to a place of safety
outside the city wall. Paul needed assistance, support, and protection which his
friends provided at this critical time. The pastor encouraged us to be rope holders
and asked, “Who are your rope holders?” Last year I found myself revisiting this
question.
June 2017, our family walked through dark days as our premature granddaughter
died after only six days. The same week, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Later
we faced loss of income from my job resignation due to my health. We were
essentially helpless, yet we experienced the love of God in a very real way. God
used “rope holders” in our lives to show His love, His grace, and His provision
over and over.
Each Sunday, we were stopped by people telling us of their prayers and speaking
words of comfort. Cards, meals, and gifts were showered upon us. When we are
weak, He is strong…He sends “rope holders” to encourage us in our faith.
Jesus, thank You for the men and women of Grace that You use to “hold the
ropes.” Thank You for the body of Christ that stands behind us, supporting us
in word, deed, and prayer.
