P. 123
You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what
you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men,
who will be able to teach others also. 2 Timothy 2:1–2
We are the beneficiaries of generations of disciples who took these words
seriously and entrusted the faith to those who came after them. Four generations
of disciples are found just in verse two:
1. “me” (Paul)
2. “you” (Timothy)
3. “faithful men”
4. “others”
By God’s grace, I was privileged to have a nearly unbroken chain of disciplers
in my life, beginning at Grace. There was the man who took me under his wing
when I was in sixth grade, the woman who taught me how to share my faith,
and the pastor who gave me opportunities to explore pastoral ministry gifts.
These faithful people and many others were intentional about discipling me so
that I could disciple others. Who is God calling you to invite into an intentional
disciple-making relationship?
Thankfully, the strength to disciple people does not come from ourselves but
from “the grace that is in Christ Jesus” (verse 1). The question we all need to ask
is, will it end with us? Or will the Lord find us faithful to the task of transferring
the faith to following generations for the next 150 years and beyond?
Our Father, strengthen us by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and enable us
by Your Spirit’s power to faithfully multiply disciples for generations to come.
