P. 122
A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”
(For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman
said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of
Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) John 4:7–9
This passage is one of the longest recorded conversations in the Bible. Jesus
reached out to a person and broke all the social rules of His time. This woman
stated that Jews did not associate with—let alone talk to—Samaritans. In addition,
there were rules in Jewish culture regarding men speaking to women in public.
The last broken rule was that rabbis did not speak to women with her reputation.
But Jesus was more interested in the person than the rules. Jesus focused on
grace. He entered into the relationship first. He shared the living water first. His
actions spoke as loud as His words. It was not until later in the conversation that
Jesus pointed out her sin.
Jesus shows us how to reach out to others no matter who they are or where they
have been. It is the relationships we build and the demonstration of His grace that
will lead others to Christ. It has been exciting to see how God has been using our
church to reach our community as we strive to become a body of all peoples and
generations.
Lord, help us to see others with the same eyes and the same heart as You saw
the woman at the well.
