Unlimited Grace Value – Gracious Humility
Submit yourselves therefore to God. James 4:7
How can we better live a life that embodies Gracious Humility? What is
humility? If we focus first on our relationship and behavior towards other people
instead of first and foremost to God, are we following the biblical primary tenets
of humility?
Over the last two years, all the adult Sunday school classes wrestled with these
questions in a three-week short course. Studying humility from four divergent
schools of thought yielded interesting insights (practically, academically,
biblically and theologically). What did we learn?
Practically, most people simply see humility as submissive interpersonal behavior.
If you submit to another person’s desire, that’s humility. Really, that’s it? No wonder
so many are skeptical; submissive behavior goes against our human nature.
Academics, even after decades of study, don’t agree on a common definition of
humility, how to measure it, or if it can be taught through interventions, and
precious few include any spiritual component.
Biblical characters from Noah, Abraham, Joseph, and Moses, to Ruth, Samuel,
David, Esther, Hosea, Stephen, Paul, and the greatest example—Jesus—all
embraced God’s will as their own, regardless of their circumstances.
Setting our own will aside and submitting to our LORD’s will, for His eternal
purposes and for His glory, that’s Gracious Humility. Easy to say…but…easy to
live? Not yet!
Lord, by the power of Your Holy Spirit, enable us to be a reflection of Your
Gracious Humility as we live our lives for Your eternal purposes, all for Your
great glory!
