Unlimited Grace Value – Global Discipleship
When he [Jesus] saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were
harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples,
“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the
Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Matthew 9:36–38
Did you ever hear God speak directly to you? I did. I often travel and on
my last trip, I had occasion to spend some extended time with the same man
for the third trip in a row. I heard God distinctly say: “Do you think that’s
a coincidence?”
When we are saved, why don’t we just go straight to heaven? Maybe like
Monopoly—don’t pass Go, don’t collect $200—just go straight to heaven. Seems
like it would be a lot easier that way!
The reason is that God has a different plan for our lives. He desires two things
from us.
First, He desires that our lives would grow deep roots in the grace and power of
His Spirit. We should become His disciples, learning to follow His Son in every
way. Giving Him glory, learning to depend on the gospel, and being humble and
gracious are all steps on this journey.
And second, He wants His disciples to be laborers in His harvest. He loved the
world so much that He sacrificed His only Son—even when we were still sinners!
He wants the world to know and…wait for it…He wants us to tell them!
God’s perfect plan—His disciples making more disciples!
O Father, give us the desire to follow Your Son so closely that we start to
become just like Him! Please put into our hearts the love and compassion that
You have for the lost. Please overflow our hearts with Your Spirit such that
the love that You have shown us flows into the lives of others. Help us to see
the harvest as our family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, our communities,
and the whole world. We pray that You would raise laborers for Your harvest,
and we could be found faithful.
