Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you
ought to answer each person. Colossians 4:6
My prayer request to my adult Sunday school class was for my neighbor’s
foster daughter—a crib for her coming baby. A woman responded, “I have a crib
she can use.” So we got it to her.
Time passed, and the family moved. I had no idea of their whereabouts. Whenever
I saw that class member, I felt sheepish for never returning the crib to her. She
never brought it up, but I remembered. Feeling guilty, I decided to apologize and
offer to pay for the crib. Approaching her nervously, I voiced my regret and my
inability to return her property. She said, “Don’t worry; I’d forgotten all about it
        and don’t even need it!”
With her gracious answer, a weight left me, and a relationship that had felt
strained and awkward was no longer that way. My classmate had shown me grace.
And receiving her grace gave me a desire to treat others graciously, just as God
treats us. Grace can be contagious!
Dear Lord God of grace, thank You for the grace You show us and for the
opportunities for the giving and receiving of grace among Your children. In
        Jesus’ name, amen.
