Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6
In high school I helped remodel a building for a new church. At one point a
fellow volunteer dropped a nail. I waited while he searched the floor.
Finally I said, “Why don’t you get another nail?”
“I just prayed God would help me find that nail,” he said.
“You prayed about finding a nail!?” I said. “Maybe we ought to save prayer
for things a little bit bigger.”
“Oh no, Bryan,” he said. “The Bible says ‘in everything by prayer and
supplication let your requests be made known to God.’”

That day I learned God wants us to pray about matters both large and small. We
may hesitate, fearing we may “bother” Him with minor matters. Yet, “everything”
            means everything!
As a pastor, my heart has been touched and thrilled to read the prayers of God’s
people in this devotional. The reason is more than mere sentiment. Long ago a
wise man wrote that prayer is not simply seeking a greater work of God—prayer
is a greater work of God.
As we celebrate 150 years of God’s faithfulness to Grace Presbyterian Church and
her people, we should remember the greatest work of God in us is making us a
people reliant on His grace. No practice more reflects such reliance, or ensures
His future work in us, than being a people of prayer—in everything.
Lord, help us to pray about everything so that we may experience Your grace
            in all things.
                                                     – Pastor Bryan Chapell
