Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the
LORD, the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, surely there shall be neither dew
nor rain these years, except by my word.” 1 Kings 17:1 (NASB)
Have you ever asked the question, “How could God use a person like me?” Or
“What qualities does it take to be used by God?”
Elijah, the prophet, found himself with a seemingly impossible task: to challenge
Ahab, one of the most wicked kings of Israel, to repent and humble himself before
the Lord.
In 1 Kings 17:1, we find three characteristics of the kind of believer that God uses
to have an impact for Him.
First, Elijah was convinced of the reality of God—that God was alive and
actively engaged in the world. Second, Elijah believed that he was a personal
representative of God. He pictured himself standing before his King as a
servant and ambassador. Third, Elijah was convinced that God could do what
He promised. He could confidently claim that it would not rain until he said so
because he believed God’s promise in Deuteronomy 11:13–17; that if Israel would
be obedient to His commandments, love the Lord their God and serve Him with
all their heart and soul, that He would give rain to the land. Elijah knew and acted
on God’s promises.
Father, help us to recognize daily that You are alive and working in our lives
and in the world, that we are indeed Your ambassadors and that we can be
confident that You will be true to all Your promises for Your glory.
