“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days,” declares the Lord:
“I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds.” Hebrews 10:16
The pencil is a wonderful little tool. As I recently searched my house for a
pencil, I thought of the many ways it relates to our lives.
Pencils often get lost. People also seem to get lost at times. God never loses you!
And He is always there to love and forgive. Think of some folks that are missing
from our fellowship of believers, then give them a call and tell them you would
like to get together.
The heart of a pencil is the lead in the center. The lead is numbered by its hardness.
Our souls, until we give our lives to Christ, are also hard. Lives softened to God
are easy to use, and He can write His love to the world with them.
Pencils often need to be sharpened. To sharpen the pencil, a little of it is consumed.
Some things may have to be trimmed off as God sharpens us.
Are we a red pencil? Do we criticize, find errors, and cross out other’s thoughts?
We need to repent of judgmental attitudes and let the Holy Spirit correct others.
Finally, there’s the eraser. Christ’s death on the cross is the great eraser of sin.
Because of Jesus, God hands you a clean sheet of paper to write your life on.
Lord, thank You for erasing our sins so completely. Help us be like pencils
with soft lead, small because we are consumed in Your service, sharpened each
day by prayer and the study of Your Word.
