Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the
outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Hebrews 13:7
A scholarly theologian once said, “God, in His sovereignty, has assigned man
responsibility.” God alone gives spiritual growth, but He assigned His adopted
sons and daughters the responsibility of “planting” and “watering”: evangelism
and discipleship, sharing the gospel, and nurturing the faith of spiritually younger
people.
When I was in college, someone, who recognized this responsibility, came into
my life. He believed the verse that says “how are they to believe in him of whom
they have never heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching?”
Because of God sovereignly ordaining this man’s planting and watering, I am
saved. I am removed from a lifestyle of slavery to passions, pleasures, hatred, and
envy, and called into the peace, joy, and righteousness of the family of God my
Father. And I want that for others. I want to imitate the faith of that man, and
experience the outcome of that man’s way of life. Its result is eternal life. It was
for me.
One awesome portion of God’s grace to us is our spiritual family—in this case our
older brothers and sisters in Christ. Let’s recognize and follow them.
My Father, please show Your glory to all people through sanctifying godly,
older men and women among us, making them able to lead others. Sanctify
those younger in faith among us, teaching them to submit to the example of
these older brothers and sisters in Christ.
